KUALA LUMPUR, 22nd February, 2026 (WAM) — A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck off Malaysia’s Sabah state on Borneo island, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The tremor occurred at 12:57 am (local time), with its epicentre located less than 100 kilometres northeast of the coastal capital, Kota Kinabalu, reported AFP.
The USGS said the quake originated at a depth of 619.8 kilometres.
